Question: As a youth leader, write a report to the chairman of your local government on the causes of youth unemployment in your community.
A REPORT ON THE CAUSES OF YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IN GREENFIELD COMMUNITY
Introduction
I, Ibrahim Musa, the Youth Leader of Greenfield Community, submit this report on the causes of youth unemployment in our area. The report is based on observations, interviews with affected youths, and discussions held during community youth meetings.
Causes of Youth Unemployment
- Lack of Skills and Training
Many youths in the community lack employable skills. While some have completed secondary school, they are not trained in practical skills such as carpentry, tailoring, ICT, or mechanics that could earn them a living. - Limited Job Opportunities
The few industries and businesses in the local government area cannot absorb the growing number of job seekers. This leaves many qualified youths idle. - High Level of School Dropouts
Poverty and poor parental support have caused several youths to drop out of school. Without education or vocational training, they find it difficult to secure decent jobs. - Poor Infrastructure
Bad roads, irregular electricity supply, and lack of modern facilities discourage investors from establishing businesses in the community, thereby limiting job creation. - Corruption and Nepotism
In some cases, job opportunities are given to the well-connected rather than to qualified youths. This discourages hard work and merit. - Overdependence on White-Collar Jobs
Many youths focus only on government jobs, neglecting entrepreneurship and self-employment. This mindset worsens unemployment.
Effects of Youth Unemployment
- Increase in crime such as theft, internet fraud, and cultism.
- Rising cases of drug abuse and social vices among idle youths.
- Frustration and hopelessness, which sometimes lead to mental health problems.
- Migration of talented youths to urban areas, leaving the community underdeveloped.
Recommendations
To tackle youth unemployment in our community, I recommend the following measures:
- Vocational Training Centres – The local government should establish skill acquisition centres to equip youths with practical skills.
- Support for Entrepreneurship – Provide small loans and grants to youths to start businesses.
- Improved Education System – Strengthen schools and provide scholarships for less-privileged students to reduce dropout rates.
- Infrastructure Development – Invest in good roads, electricity, and markets to attract investors.
- Transparency in Recruitment – Ensure merit-based employment in government and private sectors.
- Awareness Campaigns – Encourage youths to embrace self-reliance instead of waiting for white-collar jobs.
Conclusion
Unemployment among youths in Greenfield Community is a pressing issue that requires urgent attention. With proper skills training, entrepreneurship support, and infrastructural development, the problem can be significantly reduced, paving the way for growth and peace in the community.
