Dear Sir,
MEASURES TO CURB ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION IN OWERRI TOWN
Through the pages of your highly respected newspaper, I wish to draw attention to the increasing rate of environmental pollution in Owerri town and to suggest practical measures that can help address this pressing challenge.
In recent years, pollution in our town has become a serious concern. Heaps of refuse line the streets, drainage channels are blocked with plastics, and the air is filled with smoke from burning waste and exhaust fumes from vehicles. To make matters worse, industries located near residential areas discharge untreated effluents into rivers, thereby contaminating water sources. The result is an environment that is not only unsightly but also dangerous to health.
The effects of this situation are evident. Cases of malaria, cholera, and respiratory illnesses are on the rise. Flooding has become a yearly problem because blocked drains prevent the free flow of water. Children are forced to play in polluted surroundings, while traders and commuters endure the stench of uncollected refuse. Unless urgent steps are taken, the quality of life in Owerri will continue to deteriorate.
In my view, there are several measures that can help curb this menace. First, the government should strengthen the waste management system by ensuring regular collection and proper disposal of refuse. Dumping of refuse on streets and in drains should attract strict penalties to discourage offenders.
Secondly, industries must be compelled to treat their waste before discharging it into the environment. Environmental inspectors should carry out regular checks and sanction defaulting companies. Thirdly, the government should introduce more recycling programmes and encourage citizens to sort waste into plastics, metals, and organic materials. This will not only reduce pollution but also create job opportunities.
Public enlightenment is another vital step. Schools, churches, mosques, and community groups should be engaged in campaigns that emphasize the dangers of pollution and the importance of maintaining a clean environment. Citizens should be educated to stop burning refuse in open spaces and instead use designated waste bins.
Lastly, trees should be planted along major roads and in open spaces to absorb carbon dioxide and beautify the town. A greener environment will help reduce air pollution and improve the general outlook of the city.
If these measures are faithfully implemented, Owerri town will become cleaner, healthier, and more habitable. I appeal to you to kindly publish this letter so that relevant authorities and the public at large will take decisive action.
Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.
Yours faithfully,
