REPORT ON THE POOR SANITARY CONDITION OF THE SCHOOL

By Aisha Ibrahim, Environmental Prefect

Introduction

This report is written to bring to the attention of the Principal the poor sanitary condition of Bright Future College, Kaduna. As the Environmental Prefect, I have observed with concern the state of cleanliness across various areas of the school environment.

Areas of Concern

  1. Hostel Surroundings: The hostel surroundings are littered with nylon bags, empty sachet water bags, and unkempt grasses. The drainages around the hostel are blocked, causing stagnant water.
  2. Toilets and Bathrooms: The toilets are poorly maintained, with foul odour due to irregular cleaning and inadequate supply of disinfectants.
  3. Classrooms: Many classrooms have dusty floors, cobwebs on walls, and littered desks. Students often drop waste papers indiscriminately.
  4. Refuse Disposal: The refuse bins provided are few and often left overflowing for days without disposal. This has attracted flies and rodents.
  5. Dining Hall: Plates and utensils are sometimes left unwashed after meals, creating an unpleasant smell.

Effects of Poor Sanitation

  1. Health Risks: The stagnant water and unclean environment have increased the cases of malaria and typhoid among students.
  2. Unpleasant Atmosphere: The school compound gives off an unattractive outlook, which could tarnish the reputation of the school.
  3. Reduced Concentration: The foul smell in some areas distracts students during lessons.
  4. Risk of Epidemics: The conditions may lead to outbreak of diseases such as cholera if urgent steps are not taken.

Measures Taken So Far

  • Sanitation duties were assigned to classes, but many students show little commitment.
  • A general cleanup exercise was organized last week, but the problem persists due to poor maintenance.
  • Complaints have been lodged to the school janitors, but their response is slow.

Recommendations

  1. Regular Cleaning: Toilets and classrooms should be cleaned daily with disinfectants.
  2. Provision of Waste Bins: More refuse bins should be provided and waste disposed of regularly.
  3. Blocked Drainages: The drainages should be cleared immediately to allow free flow of water.
  4. Grass Cutting: The overgrown grasses around hostels and fields should be cut fortnightly.
  5. Strict Supervision: Prefects and teachers should supervise sanitation duties to ensure compliance.
  6. Health Education: The school should organize health talks to educate students on the importance of hygiene.

Conclusion

The poor sanitary condition of the school poses a serious threat to the health and academic well-being of students. With prompt action from the school management and commitment from students, the school can regain its reputation as a clean and healthy learning environment.

Respectfully submitted,
Aisha Ibrahim
Environmental Prefect
