REPORT ON LATENESS TO SCHOOL AMONG STUDENTS

By Peter Musa, Timekeeper

Introduction

As the official timekeeper of Bright Future College, Kaduna, I wish to present this report on the growing problem of lateness among students. The report covers observations made during the last four weeks, from Monday, 5th June to Friday, 30th June 2023.

Extent of the Problem

Out of a total student population of 850, an average of 120 students arrive late daily. This represents about 14% of the entire school population. Mondays record the highest cases of lateness, with up to 180 students arriving after the morning assembly, while Fridays record the lowest, averaging 70 latecomers.

Causes of Lateness

My observation and interaction with students reveal the following major causes:

  1. Distance from School: Many students live far away and depend on unreliable public transport.
  2. Parental Negligence: Some parents fail to wake their wards early or monitor their morning routines.
  3. Poor Time Management: Several students waste time on unnecessary activities such as watching television or playing games before preparing for school.
  4. Traffic Congestion: Students who come by car or bus often complain of being delayed by heavy traffic in the mornings.

Effects of Lateness

  1. Disruption of Morning Assembly: Latecomers miss important announcements and moral talks.
  2. Poor Academic Performance: Students who arrive late often miss the first lessons of the day, which are usually core subjects.
  3. Indiscipline: Frequent lateness encourages disregard for school rules and reduces overall discipline.
  4. Negative Example: Persistent lateness by some students may influence others to copy the habit.

Measures Already Taken

  • Latecomers are recorded daily in the lateness register.
  • Punishments such as sweeping, grass-cutting, and writing lines are given.
  • Parents of chronic latecomers have been invited for discussions.

Recommendations

  1. Parents should be encouraged to provide adequate supervision in the mornings.
  2. Students living far from school should consider relocating closer to reduce transport delays.
  3. The school should organize a sensitization program on proper time management.
  4. Persistent latecomers should face stiffer punishments to serve as deterrents.
  5. Management could explore arranging a school bus system for students from distant areas.

Conclusion

Lateness to school is a serious problem that affects discipline and learning in Bright Future College. If prompt action is taken, this menace can be curbed and punctuality improved.

Respectfully submitted,
Peter Musa
Timekeeper
