REPORT ON THE POOR STATE OF THE SCHOOL LIBRARY
By Maryam Yusuf, Library Prefect
Introduction
This report is submitted to bring to the attention of the Principal the deteriorating condition of the library at Bright Future College, Abuja. As the Library Prefect, I have observed several issues that hinder effective learning and research among students.
Areas of Concern
- Insufficient Books and Materials:
Many essential textbooks and reference materials for core subjects such as Mathematics, English, Science, and Social Studies are either outdated or unavailable. Students often struggle to find books relevant to their studies. - Poor Organization:
Books are not arranged systematically according to subject or category, making it difficult for students to locate resources. - Inadequate Seating:
The library has limited seating capacity, which cannot accommodate the large number of students who wish to study or conduct research. - Lack of Technological Resources:
There is no computer system or internet access to support digital research. Students are unable to access e-books, online journals, or other educational platforms. - Maintenance Issues:
The library is dusty, with broken windows, poor lighting, and damaged shelves. These conditions discourage students from spending time in the library.
Effects on Students
- Poor Academic Performance:
The lack of learning materials prevents students from studying effectively, leading to poor performance in examinations. - Limited Research Skills:
Students are unable to develop research and reading habits, which are essential for higher education. - Decreased Motivation:
An uncomfortable and poorly maintained library environment discourages students from using it regularly.
Measures Already Taken
- Prefects have tried to organize the few available books by subject and author.
- Awareness campaigns have been conducted to encourage students to take care of library resources.
Recommendations
- Provision of Books:
Update the library with current textbooks, reference materials, and magazines for all subjects. - Library Organization:
Introduce a cataloging system and proper shelving to facilitate easy access to books. - Seating and Infrastructure:
Increase seating capacity and repair broken furniture and windows. - Technology Integration:
Install computers and provide internet access to support digital research. - Regular Maintenance:
Schedule regular cleaning and upkeep to maintain a conducive learning environment.
Conclusion
The poor state of the school library is a serious impediment to learning. Immediate action by the school management is necessary to ensure that students can access the resources they need for academic success. Improving the library will foster better study habits, research skills, and overall academic performance.
Respectfully submitted,
Maryam Yusuf
Library Prefect
