REPORT ON THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY A RAINSTORM IN GREAT FAITH COLLEGE
By Chinedu Okafor, Senior Prefect
Introduction
I write to formally report to you, the Principal of Great Faith College, Enugu, the extent of damage caused by a heavy rainstorm that occurred on Monday, 15th May 2023. The rain, which started around 4:00 p.m. and lasted for two hours, was accompanied by strong winds and thunder. It left behind significant destruction to school property and disrupted normal academic activities.
Areas Affected
- Classrooms
Two blocks of classrooms had their roofs blown off, leaving the students exposed to rain. Several desks and chairs were soaked and some were broken. - Library
The roof of the school library was partially removed. Rainwater entered the building and damaged about 200 textbooks and reference materials. - Laboratories
The Physics laboratory suffered serious damage as windows were shattered by the strong winds. Some fragile equipment, including test tubes and glass beakers, were destroyed. - School Fence
A large portion of the fence behind the administrative block collapsed, leaving the school compound vulnerable to intruders. - Trees and Environment
Several trees within the compound were uprooted, blocking some pathways and littering the premises with broken branches.
Immediate Consequences
- Academic activities were disrupted the following day as some classes could not hold.
- Students were relocated to other available classrooms, leading to congestion.
- The school property lost to the storm is estimated at several hundreds of thousands of naira.
Recommendations
In view of the above, I humbly recommend the following:
- Urgent repair of classroom roofs, library, and laboratory windows.
- Purchase of new desks, chairs, and laboratory equipment to replace the damaged ones.
- Reconstruction of the collapsed section of the school fence to ensure security.
- Engagement of laborers to clear fallen trees and restore order to the compound.
- Appeal to the Parents–Teachers Association (PTA) and the State Ministry of Education for financial assistance.
Conclusion
The rainstorm has left the school in a vulnerable state, and urgent action is required to restore normalcy. Prompt repairs and support will ensure that students’ learning is not further hindered.
Respectfully submitted,
Chinedu Okafor
Senior Prefect
