One of the most persistent problems in education today is examination malpractice. This refers to all forms of cheating before, during, and after examinations, and it has become a widespread issue in many countries, including Nigeria. The menace not only undermines the credibility of certificates but also produces graduates who lack real knowledge and skills. Understanding the causes of examination malpractice is the first step towards finding lasting solutions.

One major cause is the excessive emphasis placed on paper qualifications. In many societies, academic certificates are seen as the only route to employment, social status, and success. Parents, teachers, and even students believe that passing examinations is more important than genuine learning. This unhealthy attitude creates pressure on students to succeed at all costs, even if it means engaging in malpractice.

Another cause is inadequate preparation on the part of students. Many learners waste valuable time on social media, entertainment, and peer activities instead of studying. When examinations draw near, they realize they are unprepared and resort to cheating as a shortcut. Poor study habits, laziness, and lack of time management contribute to this problem.

The behavior of parents also fuels examination malpractice. Some parents encourage their children to cheat by paying invigilators, teachers, or supervisors to assist them in examinations. Others put undue pressure on their children to obtain excellent grades, even when the children are not capable. Such parental interference makes students believe that dishonesty is acceptable as long as success is achieved.

The school system itself plays a role. Some schools are poorly supervised, with weak disciplinary measures that allow cheating to flourish. In some cases, corrupt teachers and invigilators demand money from students in exchange for “help” during examinations. When teachers, who are supposed to be role models, engage in such practices, students lose respect for honesty.

Inadequate facilities also encourage malpractice. Overcrowded classrooms, insufficient textbooks, and poorly equipped libraries make effective teaching and learning difficult. Without access to quality resources, many students feel disadvantaged and resort to dishonest means during examinations.

The larger society contributes as well. In many communities, corrupt practices are tolerated and sometimes celebrated. When students see politicians, businesspeople, and leaders engaging in fraudulent activities and prospering, they imitate such behavior in their academic life. This creates a cycle where dishonesty is passed from one generation to another.

Finally, the absence of strong punishment worsens the situation. When examination malpractice is detected, culprits are often left unpunished or given light penalties. The lack of serious consequences emboldens others to cheat, believing they can escape punishment.

Solving this problem requires collective effort. Parents should emphasize hard work and integrity. Schools must provide proper facilities, enforce discipline, and reward honesty. Government authorities should ensure examinations are strictly supervised and culprits punished. Above all, students must realize that true success comes from genuine learning, not from dishonesty.
