WAEC English Summary Practice – Passage 14

One of the major challenges facing modern societies is road accidents. Road accidents refer to collisions involving vehicles, pedestrians, or both, leading to injury, death, or property damage. They occur daily in cities, towns, and rural areas, causing loss of lives, economic setbacks, and emotional trauma. To reduce accidents, it is important to understand their causes.

A primary cause of road accidents is reckless driving. Many drivers exceed speed limits, ignore traffic signs, or overtake carelessly. Over-speeding reduces reaction time and increases the likelihood of collisions.

Driver fatigue and inexperience also contribute. Long hours on the road without rest cause drivers to lose focus. Young or untrained drivers may lack the necessary skills to handle emergencies safely.

Poor road conditions are another factor. Potholes, eroded surfaces, unmarked roads, and inadequate lighting make driving dangerous. In rainy seasons, slippery roads further increase the risk of accidents.

Vehicle defects and poor maintenance play a significant role. Many vehicles on the road have faulty brakes, worn tires, or non-functional lights. Such defects reduce the ability to control the vehicle and avoid crashes.

Disregard for traffic rules contributes heavily. Some drivers ignore seat belt laws, drink-and-drive regulations, and pedestrian rights. Pedestrians who cross roads carelessly or jaywalk also increase the risk of accidents.

Overcrowding and traffic congestion worsen the situation. In cities with high traffic density, drivers may become impatient, leading to rash decisions. Congestion also increases the chances of minor collisions escalating into serious accidents.

Alcohol and drug abuse is another major cause. Intoxicated drivers have impaired judgment, slow reaction times, and poor coordination, making accidents more likely.

Poor enforcement of traffic laws encourages risky behaviour. Where fines, penalties, and sanctions are weak or irregular, drivers feel free to flout rules without fear of consequences.

Lastly, environmental factors such as fog, heavy rain, and poor visibility increase accident risks. Drivers who fail to adjust their speed or pay attention to changing weather conditions often cause collisions.

The consequences of road accidents are severe. They result in loss of lives, permanent injuries, destruction of property, and financial losses. Families and communities are affected emotionally and economically. Reducing accidents requires understanding and addressing their causes collectively.
