Question: As a student representative, write a speech to government officials visiting your school on the problems facing your school.
The Honourable Commissioner for Education, distinguished government officials, our respected principal, teachers, fellow students, ladies and gentlemen, good morning.
On behalf of the entire student body, I warmly welcome you to our school. We are deeply grateful for your visit, which shows your concern for our education and future. I have been asked to present to you some of the major problems facing our school.
Firstly, the problem of inadequate classrooms. Our school population has grown over the years, but the number of classrooms has remained almost the same. As a result, many classes are overcrowded, making teaching and learning very difficult.
Secondly, the issue of insufficient teaching materials and facilities. Our library has very few books, most of which are outdated. The science laboratories lack modern equipment, which makes practical lessons incomplete. In this age of technology, we do not have enough computers to train students in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Thirdly, the problem of poor infrastructure. Many of our classrooms have leaking roofs, broken windows, and cracked walls. During the rainy season, lessons are often disrupted. The school environment also needs proper fencing to ensure security.
Furthermore, we face the challenge of inadequate teachers. Some subjects, especially in the sciences, have too few teachers to handle the number of students. This affects the performance of students in external examinations like WAEC and NECO.
Lastly, our school lacks recreational and sports facilities. The playground is poorly maintained, and we do not have enough equipment for athletics, football, and other sporting activities. Since sports are important for the physical development of students, this is a serious challenge.
Distinguished guests, we are not presenting these problems as complaints but as an appeal. We know that government has many responsibilities, but we also believe that education is the key to national development. By solving these problems, you will be investing in the future of not just the students here, but of our nation as a whole.
In conclusion, we sincerely request that you look into these challenges and provide urgent assistance. With your support, our school will become a true centre of learning, discipline, and excellence.
Thank you for listening, and may God bless you.
