Holidays are moments every student eagerly anticipates, a time to rest after months of rigorous academic work. My last holiday, however, was more than just a period of rest. It was a blend of work, leisure, and discovery that made it both memorable and rewarding.
As soon as school closed, I travelled with my family to my grandmother’s village. The journey itself was refreshing. From the car window, I watched as the city’s noisy streets gave way to vast fields, tall trees, and quiet villages. The cool breeze and the sight of cattle grazing in open spaces filled me with excitement.
On arrival, my grandmother welcomed us warmly. She prepared a special meal of pounded yam and vegetable soup, which we ate with great delight. The peace of the village was striking compared to the bustle of the city. Birds chirped from the trees, children played freely in the compound, and the air was fresh and cool. I immediately knew I would enjoy my stay.
Each morning, I woke up early to help with chores. I fetched water from the stream, swept the compound, and sometimes accompanied my uncle to the farm. At first, the tasks were tiring, but I soon got used to them. They taught me the value of hard work and discipline. I also learned how to harvest maize and yams, an experience I had only read about in books.
Afternoons were devoted to fun and relaxation. I joined my cousins in swimming in the stream, playing football on the village square, and chasing butterflies across the fields. Sometimes, we gathered under the mango tree to listen to folk tales from my grandmother. Her stories were full of wisdom, humour, and lessons that made me think deeply about life.
Evenings were equally enjoyable. After dinner, we often sat outside, gazing at the starry sky. The night in the village was quiet, with only the distant sound of crickets breaking the silence. Unlike the city where electric lights dominated, the moonlight illuminated the surroundings beautifully, giving everything a magical glow.
My holiday was not only about leisure; I also used the time to study. I carried along some textbooks and past questions, and I devoted an hour or two each day to revision. This helped me stay sharp and prepared for the next academic session.
When the holiday finally came to an end, I was reluctant to leave. I had grown attached to the calm life of the village and the warmth of my extended family. Yet, I was also glad to return home, refreshed and wiser.
My last holiday was indeed unforgettable. It gave me rest from schoolwork, exposed me to rural life, strengthened family bonds, and instilled in me valuable lessons. It was a holiday worth remembering.
