Causes and Effects of Examination Malpractice Among Students

Examination malpractice has become one of the greatest problems facing the educational system today. It is the act of cheating or engaging in dishonest practices during examinations in order to gain unfair advantage. This social ill is not only common among students but has also involved teachers, invigilators, and even parents. Understanding its causes and effects is important if the menace is to be properly addressed.

One of the major causes of examination malpractice is poor preparation on the part of students. Many students neglect their studies during the term, only to realise at the last minute that they are not ready for the examination. In a desperate attempt to pass, they resort to cheating. The wide availability of “expo” or leaked question papers encourages this habit.

Another cause is the pressure to succeed at all costs. In today’s society, a person’s worth is often judged by their academic certificates. Parents, peers, and even schools place heavy expectations on students to pass with excellent grades. Some students, fearing failure or punishment, are tempted to cut corners.

Corruption in the educational system also contributes to the problem. Some invigilators or school officials, driven by greed, accept bribes to allow malpractice. At times, entire examination centres are compromised because of the dishonesty of a few adults who should be protecting the integrity of the system.

Examination malpractice also thrives where there is poor enforcement of rules. In some schools, invigilators are either too careless or too lenient, allowing students to smuggle notes or communicate freely during tests. When students realise that they can cheat without serious consequences, they are encouraged to continue.

The effects of examination malpractice are numerous and damaging. Firstly, it lowers the standard of education. Students who pass through dishonest means lack the knowledge and skills expected of them. This produces half-baked graduates who cannot perform effectively in society.

Secondly, it destroys the moral fabric of the nation. Students who cheat in school may carry the habit into their professional lives, becoming corrupt workers, leaders, or public officials. A society filled with such people cannot progress.

Examination malpractice also discourages hard work. Brilliant and diligent students feel cheated when their lazy counterparts score higher marks through dishonest means. This can kill the spirit of competition and reduce motivation for genuine learning.

Finally, it brings shame to schools and the nation as a whole. When reports of widespread cheating surface, the credibility of certificates issued by that nation is questioned. This makes it difficult for students to gain respect in international academic and professional settings.

In conclusion, examination malpractice is a dangerous problem that undermines the future of individuals and the nation. Its causes include poor preparation, pressure, corruption, and weak enforcement of rules. Its effects are the destruction of educational standards, promotion of corruption, discouragement of hard work, and loss of credibility. All hands must therefore be on deck—students, teachers, parents, and the government—to fight this menace and restore the integrity of examinations.
