Schools are often centres of activities that bring people together, but one event in my school that stood out was the Annual Cultural Day Celebration. It was a colourful occasion that attracted parents, old students, traditional rulers, and even visitors from neighbouring communities.
The preparation for the event began weeks earlier. Students were divided into groups to represent different Nigerian cultures. Costumes were sewn, dances were rehearsed, and traditional dishes were prepared. The entire school buzzed with excitement as the date approached.
On the day of the celebration, the school compound was beautifully decorated with balloons, flags, and banners. A large canopy was erected on the field, with chairs arranged neatly for guests. Loudspeakers were fixed at different corners, and the air was filled with the sound of traditional drums and songs.
Visitors began arriving early. Parents came dressed in colourful attires, while dignitaries arrived in cars and were welcomed by the principal. The sight of everyone in traditional outfits made the atmosphere lively and festive. Soon, the event officially began with prayers, followed by the principal’s opening speech.
The cultural displays were the highlight of the day. Students dressed in different attires represented the Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and other ethnic groups. Each group performed traditional dances, songs, and short plays that portrayed their culture. The audience clapped and cheered as dancers moved gracefully to the rhythm of drums and flutes.
Another interesting part of the event was the food exhibition. Tables were filled with local delicacies like pounded yam with egusi soup, tuwo shinkafa with miyan kuka, ofe onugbu with fufu, and jollof rice. Visitors tasted and enjoyed the dishes, praising the students for their efforts. The aroma of freshly prepared food filled the air, adding to the excitement of the occasion.
Competitions were also held, including traditional storytelling, fashion parade, and debate on cultural values. Winners were awarded prizes, and the joy on their faces lit up the field. Parents and visitors took pictures, capturing the colourful moments to keep as memories.
As the programme came to an end, the principal thanked everyone for attending and encouraged students to always be proud of their cultural heritage. Guests left with smiles on their faces, while students chatted happily about the day’s events.
In conclusion, the Annual Cultural Day Celebration in my school was an unforgettable event. It showcased the beauty of our culture, brought people together, and created lasting memories for both students and visitors. It remains one of the proudest moments in my school life.
