A wedding ceremony is always a joyous occasion, but the one I attended last December remains etched in my memory. It was the union of my cousin, Mary, and her fiancé, Chinedu, and the celebration was filled with colour, music, and happiness.
The day began with excitement in our household. Everyone dressed elegantly, with the women in brightly coloured lace gowns and the men in well-tailored native attire. I wore a neatly pressed outfit of sky-blue Ankara fabric, and as I admired myself in the mirror, I knew the day would be special.
The church venue was beautifully decorated with white ribbons, fresh flowers, and sparkling lights. At the entrance, ushers welcomed guests warmly and guided them to their seats. The choir’s melodious voices filled the air with hymns of praise, setting a holy atmosphere. Soon, the bride arrived in a sleek white gown, looking radiant and graceful. The groom, in a dark suit, stood at the altar with a broad smile as he watched her walk down the aisle.
The ceremony itself was solemn and touching. The officiating minister spoke about love, patience, and commitment. When the couple exchanged vows, there was a hush in the church, and I could see tears glistening in the eyes of many guests. The ring exchange and the pronouncement of husband and wife were greeted with thunderous applause and ululations from the congregation.
After the church service, the reception followed at a spacious event hall. The atmosphere there was completely different—vibrant, loud, and festive. Colourful canopies were erected, and long tables were covered with sparkling white cloths. The hall glittered with decorations of gold and purple, and a band played lively music that had everyone swaying to the rhythm.
The couple made a grand entrance, dancing joyfully as family and friends showered them with money in the traditional “spraying” style. Plates of jollof rice, fried rice, chicken, and snacks were served generously, and chilled drinks flowed freely. There was laughter everywhere as people greeted one another, took pictures, and enjoyed themselves.
One of the highlights of the reception was the cutting of the wedding cake. The couple held the knife together and cut into the towering cake, while guests cheered. Later, they fed each other a piece, symbolizing love and unity. The dance floor then opened, and soon it was filled with guests showing off their best moves.
As the evening wore on, the celebration gradually came to an end. Guests left with party souvenirs, smiles on their faces, and memories in their hearts. On our way home, I reflected on the joy and unity I had witnessed.
The wedding ceremony I attended was more than just a celebration of two people; it was a beautiful display of love, family, and culture. It is a memory I will always cherish.
