REPORT ON THE PROBLEM OF NOISE-MAKING IN BRIGHT FUTURE COLLEGE

By Ibrahim Musa, Senior Prefect

Introduction

This report is submitted to bring to the attention of the Principal the increasing problem of noise-making within Bright Future College, Kaduna. The issue has negatively affected the teaching and learning environment, disrupting both students and staff.

Areas of Concern

  1. Hostel Noise:
Students in the hostels frequently engage in loud conversations, use speakers at high volume, and create disturbances late into the night, affecting those who wish to rest or study.
  2. Classroom Noise:
During lessons, some students chat or make unnecessary noises, which distracts both teachers and classmates, reducing lesson effectiveness.
  3. Playground and Campus Noise:
Excessive shouting and rowdy behavior during breaks and free periods contribute to an overall noisy environment that hinders concentration.
  4. Unauthorized Use of Electronics:
Some students play music using speakers or mobile phones in hostels and recreational areas, further exacerbating the noise problem.

Effects on the School Community

  1. Disruption of Academic Activities:
Noise interrupts lessons, making it difficult for teachers to deliver content and for students to understand and retain information.
  2. Sleep Disturbances:
Students in hostels are often unable to get adequate rest due to loud noises, which affects their concentration and performance in class.
  3. Stress and Irritability:
Persistent noise increases stress levels among both students and staff, affecting their overall well-being.
  4. Undermines Discipline:
Noise-making reflects poor student discipline and can encourage other forms of misconduct.

Measures Taken So Far

  • Prefects have verbally warned students and organized occasional awareness campaigns on the importance of quietness.
  • Some students have been given penalties for violating hostel quiet hours.

Recommendations

  1. Enforce Quiet Hours:
Establish and strictly enforce specific times during which noise is prohibited, especially during study and sleeping periods.
  2. Increase Supervision:
Assign more prefects and staff to monitor hostels, classrooms, and recreational areas.
  3. Awareness Campaigns:
Educate students on the negative effects of noise-making on learning and health.
  4. Limit Unauthorized Electronics:
Prohibit the use of loudspeakers and ensure mobile devices are used responsibly.
  5. Encourage Self-Discipline:
Promote a culture where students take personal responsibility for maintaining peace and quiet.

Conclusion

The problem of noise-making in Bright Future College poses a significant challenge to academic success and student well-being. Immediate and sustained action by school authorities, combined with student cooperation, is essential to restore a conducive learning environment.
