PRESS CLUB VISITS THE NATIONAL MUSEUM, LAGOS

Introduction

On Friday, 10th March 2023, members of the Press Club of St. Peter’s College, Abeokuta, embarked on an educational excursion to the National Museum, Onikan, Lagos. The trip, which was organized by the club in collaboration with the History Department, aimed at exposing students to Nigeria’s cultural heritage and improving their writing and reporting skills.

Departure and Journey

The club members, accompanied by two teachers, departed from the school premises at exactly 8:00 a.m. in the school bus. Excitement filled the air as students looked forward to the adventure. The two-hour journey was smooth, and we arrived at the National Museum at about 10:15 a.m.

Activities at the Museum

On arrival, we were warmly received by the museum’s Education Officer, who briefed us on the history of the museum and its importance in preserving Nigeria’s cultural identity.

The students were later divided into groups and taken on a guided tour of different sections of the museum. We saw relics of past Nigerian leaders, ancient artifacts, traditional masks, and archaeological findings. One of the most fascinating exhibits was the famous Festac Mask, which sparked a lot of discussion among the students.

After the tour, there was a short lecture on the role of museums in education and nation building. Students asked insightful questions, and the officer commended us for our curiosity and seriousness.

Benefits of the Excursion

The excursion was highly beneficial. It broadened our knowledge of Nigerian culture, improved our appreciation of history, and inspired us to value our heritage. For the Press Club in particular, the experience gave us rich content for our school magazine and sharpened our reporting skills.

Return Journey

We left the museum at about 3:00 p.m. after taking group photographs. The return journey was lively, with students sharing their impressions and preparing notes for their reports. We arrived safely at the school by 5:30 p.m.

Conclusion

The excursion to the National Museum was both educational and entertaining. It provided members of the Press Club with firsthand knowledge that would be useful in their writing, while also fostering unity among students. It is recommended that such trips be organized more frequently to expose students to real-life learning experiences.

WAEC examiners expect candidates to:

  • Write in report format with a clear title.
  • State the purpose of the excursion.
  • Present activities chronologically (departure, visit, return).
  • Mention the benefits/outcomes of the trip.
  • Use formal but engaging language.
  • Ensure adequate length (450+ words).

  2. Arrange events in sequence: departure → activities → return.
  3. Highlight benefits or lessons learned.
  4. Conclude with recommendations.
  5. Keep the tone factual, clear, and well-structured.
