The Principal, esteemed teachers, fellow students, ladies and gentlemen, good morning.
I am honoured to stand before you today to speak on a very serious issue affecting many young people in our society: the dangers of drug abuse among youths.
Drug abuse refers to the excessive and harmful use of substances such as cocaine, marijuana, tramadol, cigarettes, and even alcohol. Many young people believe that taking these substances will make them bold, happy, or more powerful. Sadly, the opposite is the case. Drug abuse only destroys lives and futures.
First, drug abuse causes serious health problems. It weakens the body, damages vital organs like the liver and lungs, and can lead to mental illness. Some addicts even suffer sudden death from overdose. Truly, drug abuse is a slow poison that kills silently.
Secondly, drug abuse destroys academic performance. A student who engages in drug abuse cannot concentrate, study effectively, or perform well in examinations. Instead of becoming successful graduates, many drug users end up as school dropouts.
Thirdly, drug abuse leads to crime and violence. To satisfy their cravings, many addicts engage in theft, robbery, and cultism. Some even become violent and uncontrollable, posing a danger to themselves and to society.
Furthermore, drug abuse results in loss of opportunities and reputation. No employer wants to hire someone who is irresponsible and addicted. Many youths have ruined their chances of a bright future because of this destructive habit.
Distinguished audience, we must understand that drug abuse does not make anyone a hero. It only makes a person a victim of shame and regret. True courage comes from discipline, hard work, and determination — not from drugs.
Teachers and parents must also play their part by guiding young people, creating awareness, and monitoring their behaviour closely. Together, we can prevent the spread of this evil in our schools and society.
In conclusion, drug abuse is a deadly trap that destroys health, education, reputation, and future. Let us all say No to drugs and Yes to life. Remember, the best high in life is success, not drugs.
