WAEC Informal Letter Writing: Describing Your New Environment to a Childhood Friend

Dear Mary,

It has been so long since I last wrote to you, and I have missed our chats and laughter. How are you and your family? I hope you are all fine. I have finally settled into my new environment, and I could not wait to write and share with you what it looks and feels like.

At first, when my father told us we would be relocating to Abuja because of his job transfer, I was not very happy. I thought I would miss all my friends at home, especially you. But now that I have spent some weeks here, I must admit that this new environment is far more exciting than I imagined.

Our house is located in a beautiful estate that is well-planned and peaceful. The streets are wide and lined with trees that provide shade during the hot afternoons. There are parks and playgrounds where children gather to play every evening, and the place looks lively. Unlike our former town where there were frequent power cuts, here electricity supply is fairly regular, and water flows from the tap every day.

One thing I love most about this environment is its cleanliness. Every Saturday, the estate residents come out for sanitation exercise, and even the children are encouraged to participate. As a result, there are no heaps of refuse lying about. The air feels fresh and healthy.

My new school is also impressive. It is not very far from the house, and the road leading to it is smooth and tarred. The classrooms are well-ventilated, and the library is stocked with many interesting books. I have already made a few new friends who are very kind and helpful. Though I still miss you and my old classmates, I am gradually adapting and enjoying my studies here.

Another exciting feature of this new environment is the availability of recreational centres. Last weekend, my parents took us to Jabi Lake, where we had a picnic. The scenery was breathtaking, with the cool water stretching out like a mirror and boats sailing gracefully. I took some pictures, which I will send to you when I get the chance.

Despite all these attractions, I sometimes feel lonely because I have not yet built the kind of strong friendship I had with you back home. I hope with time I will find someone as special as you.

I would love for you to visit someday during the holidays. I am sure you will enjoy exploring the parks, shopping malls, and beautiful spots around here. Please write back soon and tell me all that is happening at home.

Yours ever,
Chinonso
