Dear Chidi,
How are you doing, my dear friend? It has been quite a while since we last communicated. I hope school is going smoothly and that your parents and siblings are all in good health. I could not wait any longer before writing to share with you how I spent my Christmas and New Year holiday. It was one of the most memorable breaks I have ever had.
As you know, our holiday began a few days before Christmas. Right from the start, the atmosphere in our town was filled with excitement—colourful decorations everywhere, the smell of freshly baked cakes, and the sound of carols echoing from churches. My mother and I were very busy with preparations. We cleaned the house thoroughly, bought new curtains, and even painted the sitting room to give it a fresh look for the season.
On Christmas Eve, our church organized a carol service, and I joined the choir in singing beautiful hymns. The church was filled to capacity, and the candlelight procession gave the place a heavenly glow. That night, I truly felt the joy of Christmas in my heart.
Christmas Day itself was very lively. We prepared a special meal consisting of jollof rice, chicken, salad, and soft drinks. Relatives and neighbours came around, and the house was full of laughter. After the meal, we exchanged gifts. I received a wristwatch from my father, which I really treasure. Later in the evening, my friends and I went out to watch a local drama performance that portrayed the birth of Christ. It was entertaining and educative.
The New Year celebration was equally exciting. On New Year’s Eve, we all gathered for the crossover service at church, praying and singing until midnight. When the clock struck twelve, we shouted “Happy New Year!” and embraced one another with joy. Fireworks lit up the sky, and the atmosphere was magical.
On New Year’s Day, my family decided to visit our village. It was a refreshing experience because I got to meet many relatives I had not seen in years. My grandfather told us stories about the past, and we enjoyed the natural environment of the village. I also joined other youths in organizing a football match, which turned out to be very entertaining.
What made this holiday so special was not just the food and celebration, but also the sense of togetherness. I realized how important family and friendship are, and I promised myself to value them more. The holiday left me refreshed and ready to face the new school term with determination.
My friend, how did you spend your own holiday? I would love to hear all about it when you reply. Please send my greetings to your parents and siblings.
Yours lovingly,
David
